My Top 3 Lenses for Portrait Photography

Self-Portrait - Day 8/260

We often get asked what lenses we use for our portraits and why. It’s a good question and a lot of you said you wanted to know. So here is it!

* It’s important to state that we use full frame DSLR’s – so these recommendations are based on that.

My Top 3 Lenses for Portrait Photography are:

– Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L USM Lens

I love using this lens for portraits, the focal length is perfect, it’s not too close or far away. The 85mm f/1.8 is also great but I find myself always using the f/1.2 because it lets so much more light in and the wide aperture allows me to get a lot more light in my photographs without having to use lots of ISO which is great. Plus it’s deliciously smooth!

– Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L

This lens is really good for portrait photography, the quality is amazing. I love being able to take a close up portrait with it. It’s not at all heavy – in fact it’s lighter than the above lens – and it’s surprisingly cheap considering the quality of the lens and the photographs that it produces.

– Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L USM

My 3rd top lens for portrait photography is the 100mm. Not only does it create beautiful portraits, it’s a great lens to have whenever you want to photography other subjects really close up. This lens will capture details with exceptional focus.

Here are 3 different portraits each taken with one of the above lenses.
